Glenn Clavier, C. Tran.

Communications Consultant

In 2017, Glenn began screening award-winning international films in the Mexican town where he was spending the winter. Often dismayed by the quality of subtitles, Glenn decided to acquire the skills needed to do justice to the Seventh Art. So, he enrolled at University College London (England) and completed courses in Interlingual Subtitling, and Subtitling for the Deaf and Hearing-Impaired (SDH). This new endeavour was a natural progression of his experience, talent and training as a translator, editor, writer and journalist, and his fascination with information technologies and film.

Background

Glenn obtained a Certificate in French Proficiency at Simon Fraser University in Burnaby, B.C., then transferred to Concordia University in Montreal, from which he graduated with a Bachelor’s Degree in Creative Writing and Journalism.

He then moved to Japan, where he worked as an editor, copywriter and French-to-English translator. On leaving some four years later, he travelled Southeast Asia and southern Europe, concluding with a Spanish immersion program at the Universidad de Salamanca.

Glenn returned to Montreal and completed a Graduate Diploma in French-to-English Translation at Concordia University. Over a decade as a translator and editor followed, along with further Spanish language studies in Montreal, Mexico and Ecuador. He achieved certification as a French-to-English translator in 1998 with the Ordre des traducteurs, terminologues et interprètes agréés du Québec (OTTIAQ) and certification Spanish-to-English in 2008.

In 2007, Glenn finished a Graduate Certificate in Localization for the Web, again at Concordia, then moved to Vancouver and transferred his credentials from OTTIAQ to the Society of Translators and Interpreters of British Columbia (STIBC). In 2020, he joined The British Subtitlers Association (SUBTLE), an organization promoting high-quality subtitling and standards of professionalism.

Since the early 2000s, Glenn has regularly spent winters in Latin America. He is an avid yoga practitioner, hiker, cyclist and movie buff, and an unrepentant photographer.

Travelogue

Over four decades, Glenn has lived, travelled and studied across Canada, Latin America, Asia and Southern Europe. These experiences infuse his translations with respectful familiarity for the cultures they represent. Below is a glimpse of some of the countries Glenn has explored. Canada

Born and raised in Saskatchewan, Glenn moved to Vancouver, then Montréal, travelling across Canada along the way. Eventually, curiosity took him around the globe. He muses that it is much easier to see beauty in the unfamiliar than the familiar. Glenn has nonetheless captured a number of intriguing images from his home and native land.

Cuba

Glenn travelled to Cuba twice to participate in international translators' conferences. In 2008, he presented at the World Congress on Specialized Translation, describing his student team's experience writing, translating and localizing a website for YMCA Tours Ecuador. The conference was followed by a hiking tour across the Caribbean nation.
